Revolutionizing the culture of financial preparedness to build stronger communities and prevent housing insecurity.
"Prepare before the crisis."
Housing insecurity affects millions of people across the United States, but it is often treated as a problem that begins only when someone loses their home. In reality, housing insecurity can begin much earlier, when families struggle to afford rent, fall behind on payments, or have little financial room to handle an unexpected expense. Today, too many people are left without the financial security, knowledge, resources, and support needed to remain securely housed.
The Housing Security Project is a youth-led organization working to revolutionize the culture of financial preparedness and prevent housing insecurity in communities. Through financial education, community initiatives, volunteer projects, and advocacy, we encourage healthy financial habits, strengthen support systems, and help create communities where people are better prepared for financial hardship before it becomes a housing crisis.
Empowering young people and communities to revolutionize financial preparedness.
A future where financial preparedness is part of everyday life, where people are encouraged to save, plan ahead, and build the financial security needed to withstand unexpected hardship. We want to help create a culture of self-reliance where people are better prepared before a financial crisis becomes a housing crisis, while ensuring that those facing circumstances beyond their control have support when they need it.
Empowering young people and communities to revolutionize the culture of financial preparedness by building financial security, developing healthy saving habits, and creating support systems that prevent housing insecurity, so no individual or family faces them alone.
We believe housing security starts before a crisis. Building healthy spending and saving habits, preparing for unexpected expenses, and understanding how to manage money can help people remain financially stable when hardships occur.
We want to help create a culture where saving and financial preparedness are part of everyday life, not something people think about only after a crisis begins. At the same time, we believe strong community and public support systems are essential for people facing circumstances beyond their control.
“I used to think that financial planning was something I would worry about when I was older. The Housing Security Project helped me understand that the habits I build now can shape my financial security later. Learning how to budget, save, prepare for unexpected expenses, and understand financial choices gave me skills that I can carry into adulthood. Starting early makes financial security feel less like a distant goal and more like something I can actively build.”
- Youth Participant“Facing eviction can make you feel like no one is listening. The Housing Security Project helped me understand my options, find resources, and feel like my voice mattered. Knowing that our experiences are also being shared with legislators made me feel like we’re not just dealing with these problems, but we’re also helping create change.”

We believe everyone should have an opportunity to contribute to the fight against housing insecurity. Young people have an important role to play in understanding housing insecurity and creating change in their communities.
Through our programs, HSP members work directly on the HSP mission: financial education, the policy process from start to finish, drafting legislation, gathering community perspectives, and advocating for proposals to turn student-developed ideas into real policy change.

Every story deserves to be heard.
We believe that behind every experience with housing insecurity is a person and a story that deserves to be heard. Through HSP, we invite individuals and families affected by housing insecurity, eviction, or financial hardship to share their experiences and help others better understand the realities behind these issues.
We respect the privacy of everyone who shares their story with us. Stories may be shared anonymously, and we will not publicly identify or share personal information without permission.
